Eco Renovation Project
Aim of project To carry out a large-scale “eco-renovation” of the building. We'd like to restore the exterior, and redesign the interior of the building with the aid of an architect. The aim would be to create a much more energy efficient building, and an attractive, pleasant, fully accessible working environment for users. Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse could build on its current functions as information centre, meeting place and supporter to community groups, expanding to incorporate a café, a well-equipped resource centre/shared office space for groups with good quality computer/printer equipment, a shop stocking fair trade products/local ethical produce/eco-friendly products etc, and a space for local artists to exhibit their work. The building is similar in age and structure to much of the housing in the area. We would like for the building to be a good working example of what local people can do with their houses in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. We'd like to use “green” materials, such as eco-friendly paint, wood from sustainable local sources or reclaimed timber etc, and be able to tell people where to get hold of them – or stock some ourselves. Need for the project Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse is an old building and has some major problems that need attending to. These include damp, the exterior rendering of the building, and the windows which all need replacing. There is no proper heating system. The building is badly insulated and energy escapes meaning bills are very high. The drainage system is poor and interior structural work could greatly improve use of natural light and space. Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse has served a vital role in the local community for 19 years, supporting countless seedling groups as they find their footing as well as individuals from all sectors of the community. Potential for building on this role is great, but if Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse wishes to continue to survive and grow, it is essential that major work on the building is carried out. |
