History

We started because a number of voluntary organisations needed office and meeting space and we found a property to buy together to share costs and facilities. As there was a lack of such space in the area we knew that other groups would also make use of the building.

Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse was to be a growing space for seedling groups in the community.

Since Greenhouse started in 1982, over 60 community groups, organisations and small local businesses have benefited from our facilities. These have included environmental groups like BTCV and Gwynedd Cycle Routes, women’s groups like Women’s Aid, health projects like Mental Health User’s Forum and the Health Information Centre, campaigning groups such as Lesbian Line and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, and arts projects like Syrcas Circus. Magazines and newsletters have also been produced at Greenhouse, and we have been a base for housing projects, homelessness advice and drop-in projects, and alternative therapists.

Our original aim has been realised many times over, as countless groups and projects with limited resources have found the support they needed to grow and eventually move out into the wider community. A full list of Greenhouse resident groups, past and present, is included at the back of this report.
