Equal Opportunities

Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse is committed to equal opportunities and believes that volunteering should be open to all regardless of sex, sexual orientation, race, disability, marital status, age, religion, community background or political beliefs. Volunteer placements are made on merit, the sole selection being the individual's ability to carry out the specified task in the context of the needs and limitations of the location.

How much time do I need to give?

We need volunteers to run our information centre – and they need to be available for one day, or half day a week. However there is scope for volunteers to get involved with projects of varying lengths, ranging from a few days to several months. You might want to spend a few weeks here during your holidays if you are a student – we're quite flexible and open to suggestion.

What can I expect from Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse?

  • An induction and training period where you will be supported by another volunteer and the co-ordinator
  • Supervision and support to help you carry out your tasks
  • Safe working conditions
  • Confidentiality of volunteer records
  • The opportunity to claim reimbursement of out-of pocket expenses
  • Free training opportunities, both in-house and external
  • Regular reviews of your volunteer role to ensure both you and Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse are happy with current arrangements
  • The opportunity for a reference if you apply for paid employment elsewhere
  • The chance to make friends and meet new people, as well as to be part of a friendly, inclusive and supportive organisation

We appreciate the vital role that volunteers play at Greenhouse, and, whenever possible, try to say “thank you” by arranging trips out, a meal or a party.

What Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse expects from you.

All our volunteers are asked to:

  • Learn about Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse, and how your role fits in
  • Attend recommended training sessions
  • Sustain good relations with other volunteers, staff, members of user groups, and the public
  • Work within and support Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse policy, procedures, aims and objectives
  • Observe Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse Health and Safety policy
  • Maintain a high standard of quality and efficiency in all aspects of your role
  • Try to give a reliable time contribution if your task would benefit from regular attendance
  • Let the co-ordinator know in advance where at all possible if you are not able to attend at an agreed time, or if you are running late

How do I apply?

Complete the application form and send it or hand it in to Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse. We will contact you to arrange an informal interview, where we can discuss what areas you would be interested in getting involved in, and what time commitment you are able to give. We ask for the details of someone who knows you well (not a relation) who we may contact to provide a reference. Subject to a suitable role being available, we will then contact you to ask if you would like to become a volunteer.

Induction and settling in

We recognise that when a volunteer first comes to Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse it can seem a little overwhelming – there is a lot of information to take in and new people to meet. To ensure that you feel supported, and that your expectations as well as ours are met, we usually have a four-week induction period to allow you to learn about Ty Gwydr/Greenhouse, to find your role and to give us both the chance to assess how things are working out. During this time you will be supported by a volunteer “partner,” and have induction/training sessions with your partner and the co-ordinator. At the end of this time, there will be an informal discussion with the co-ordinator to review the work you have been doing, identify your training needs and talk about any problems. If there are any difficulties which cannot be resolved, (which is rare), we can consider reassignment to an alternative role, or if this is not possible, bringing the arrangement to a close. Of course, both of us remain free to change some aspect of the existing arrangement, or end the relationship at any time, for whatever reason.

It gives me a purpose in life that I never had before."

"You get to share conversations, experiences, see familiar
faces...have a sense of continuity. There's no pressure to be here,
but if you are...it makes a difference!"
